I am embarrassed to admit this, but I did not realize just how simple it really is to make your own applesauce. You literally just cook down some apples and add a little bit of liquid and bam you have applesauce.

Now of course, I want to walk you through this process for two reasons. One, in case you’re like me and have fallen into the cultural trap of believing that cooking from scratch is way to complicating. Two, you still need the measurements so you can have the best tasting applesauce possible.
If you have never made applesauce before, you seriously must stop everything you are doing and make it now! I promise you will thank me later. It’s that good!
As always here’s the original recipe.
So, lets gets started.
Here’s what you need:
1 bag of apples (about 6 apples) I usually buy Gala’s or whatever is on sale.
1/2 cup of brown sugar.
2 tsp of cinnamon. If you don’t like cinnamon, you can leave it out.
1 tbsp of lemon juice.
1/2 cup of water.
Saucepan with lid.




First thing to do is wash the apples. I doubled this recipe in hopes it would last a little longer. Spoiler alert, it didn’t. The kids ate half of it while it was still warm!
Next, peel and quarter the apples. Place in a sauce pan.
Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water.




Cook the apples covered on medium low heat until they are soft. You’ll know when they are done when you can easily pierce them with a fork.
This took me about twenty minutes. But, I like to cook them on low and tackle another chore while they cook.

This next part just requires getting the apples mashed up. You can do this a few different ways. You could put them in a blender. You could use something like a potato masher and mash them until you get a smooth consistency. You could probably even use a hand mixer. I choose to use my immersion blender.

Pour in a container and store in the refrigerator. This should last about a week in the refrigerator.



In case you were wondering what we did with all the apple peelings and cores….our piggies sure loved their treat!

What I truly love most about my cooking from scratch journey and the reason why I keep going when I get so overwhelmed and frustrated and just want to throw in the towel, is my children’s growing desire to be apart of cooking real food.
They not only enjoy helping but they request dishes, treats, and snacks as if I suddenly know how to make any and everything. Their confidence in me is truly inspiring.
