Now that we know how to make real butter, let’s keep the real food trend going with these homemade mashed potatoes.
Mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish. Easy and filling. Mashed potatoes are one of those dishes that seem complicating but every time I make them I think “that was easy, I should make these more often.”
I think the number one reason mashed potatoes seem complicating is because everyone hates peeling those potatoes. Pro tip, don’t peel them. It will be fine.
I always use russet potatoes but red potatoes are probably the most popular potato for mashed potatoes, especially if you plan to leave the peel on. Yellow or Gold potatoes have a creamy texture and a nice buttery flavor.
Whatever type of potato you choose, the process is still the same.
Here’s what you’ll need:
6-8 potatoes.
1 cup of Buttermilk, milk, or heavy cream.
1 stick of butter.
Salt and pepper to taste.
The first thing to do is cut up the potatoes. I usually quarter mine. Again, I don’t peel mine. Just be sure to scrub them with a kitchen brush under water to get them clean.

Place the potatoes in a large pot of water. Some people get the water boiling first, others will throw in the potatoes before they turn on the stove. I’ve done this both ways and I don’t notice a difference.
Make sure your pot has enough water to cover the potatoes.
Boil for about 20 minutes. To check to see if they are done, use a fork to stab one of the potatoes. They should be soft.
Drain the water and transfer to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. If using a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment to mash. You can also use a hand mixer to get smooth mashed potatoes.

I like using the stand mixer so it can be mixing while I add the other ingredients.

To the bowl of cooked potatoes, add your choice of milk. I used the little bit of Buttermilk I had from making butter, plus about half a cup of milk.
Add one stick of butter. Again, I used my homemade stick of butter for this recipe.
Finally, add in salt and pepper to taste.
That’s it. An easy and delicious from scratch side dish. Enjoy!
